Fort Awesome LLC ("we," "us," or "our") operates The Flappening application and website (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your information when you use our Service.

By using The Flappening, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.


1. Information We Collect

1.1 Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Email address
  • Display name
  • Authentication credentials (or tokens via Sign in with Apple / Google)

1.2 Profile and Preferences

Information you provide to customize your experience:

  • Location (city/region, for weather, aviation, and location-based widgets)
  • Interest preferences (sports teams, TV shows, stock symbols, etc.)
  • Family member names and birthdays (if you choose to enter them)
  • Widget selections and playlist configurations
  • Display settings (board size, colors, wave patterns, sound preferences)

1.3 Board and Device Information

  • Board pairing codes and linked device identifiers
  • Device type (Apple TV, Fire TV, browser)
  • Board online/offline status and last-seen timestamps

1.4 Usage Data

We automatically collect:

  • App usage patterns (which widgets are active, rotation frequency)
  • Message display history (what content was shown and when)
  • Feature interactions (buttons tapped, settings changed)
  • Crash reports and performance diagnostics
  • IP address and general geographic region

1.5 Third-Party Service Data

When you connect third-party services, we may receive:

  • Calendar event titles and times (Google Calendar)
  • Currently playing track info (Spotify, Apple Music)
  • Sports scores and schedules (via sports data APIs)
  • Flight and aircraft data (via aviation APIs)
  • Weather data for your location

We only access the minimum data necessary to power the widgets you have enabled.

1.6 Guest Messages

If someone sends a message to your board via a Party/QR link, we collect:

  • The sender's chosen display name (optional)
  • The message text
  • Timestamp

1.7 Payment Information

Subscription and purchase transactions are processed by Apple (App Store), Google (Play Store), or Stripe (web). We do not directly collect or store credit card numbers or bank account details. We receive transaction confirmations and subscription status from these processors.


2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve the Service
  • Personalize content displayed on your board (weather for your location, scores for your teams, etc.)
  • Process subscriptions and in-app purchases
  • Send service-related communications (account verification, security alerts, billing)
  • Generate and format display messages using AI (Anthropic Claude API)
  • Moderate guest/party messages for inappropriate content
  • Analyze usage patterns to improve widget quality and app performance
  • Comply with legal obligations

2.1 AI Processing

We use Anthropic's Claude API to format raw data (weather, sports scores, trivia, etc.) into natural-language messages for your board. The data sent to the AI includes only the raw content needed for formatting (e.g., "temperature: 72°F, condition: sunny") and your display preferences (board size, tone). We do not send your personal identity, email, or account details to the AI service.


3. How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

We may share your information with:

3.1 Service Providers

Third-party companies that help us operate the Service:

  • Supabase (database and authentication hosting)
  • Anthropic (AI message formatting)
  • API providers (weather, sports, aviation, entertainment data)
  • Payment processors (Apple, Google, Stripe)
  • Analytics providers (crash reporting, usage analytics)

These providers are contractually obligated to protect your data and use it only for the purposes we specify.

3.2 Shared Board Access

If you share your board with family members or other users, those users can see:

  • Current board content and settings
  • Widget playlist configuration
  • Manual messages sent to the board

Board owners control who has access and can revoke it at any time.

3.3 Party/Guest Mode

When you enable Party Mode, anyone with the QR code or link can send messages to your board. Guest messages may be visible to anyone viewing the board. You can enable moderation to review messages before they appear.

3.4 Legal Requirements

We may disclose your information if required by law, legal process, or government request, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Fort Awesome LLC, our users, or the public.


4. Data Retention

  • Account data is retained for as long as your account is active.
  • Usage data is retained for up to 24 months, then aggregated or deleted.
  • Message history (what was displayed on your board) is retained for up to 30 days, then deleted.
  • Guest messages are deleted within 24 hours of display.
  • Deleted accounts: Upon account deletion request, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.

5. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures including:

  • Encryption in transit (TLS/HTTPS)
  • Encryption at rest for sensitive data
  • Secure authentication via Sign in with Apple and OAuth
  • Row-level security in our database (users can only access their own data)
  • Regular security reviews

No method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure. While we strive to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security.


6. Your Rights and Choices

6.1 Access and Portability

You can view your account information and preferences at any time within the app or web dashboard.

6.2 Correction

You can update your profile, preferences, and widget configurations at any time.

6.3 Deletion

You can delete your account and associated data by going to Account Settings → Delete Account, or by contacting us at [email protected].

6.4 Opt-Out of Analytics

You can opt out of non-essential analytics collection in the app's privacy settings.

6.5 Location Data

Location is used only to power location-based widgets (weather, aviation, etc.). You can change or remove your location at any time in settings. We use city-level location, not precise GPS coordinates.

6.6 California Residents (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to:

  • Know what personal information we collect and how it is used
  • Request deletion of your personal information
  • Opt out of the sale of personal information (we do not sell personal information)
  • Non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

6.7 European Users (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area, you have additional rights including the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict processing, data portability, and objection. 7. Children's Privacy

The Flappening is designed for general audiences and includes family-friendly content modes. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without parental consent.

Our content rating system (G, PG, R) allows parents to restrict content. R-rated content requires an adult verification gate (math problem or PIN).

If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a child under 13, please contact us at [email protected] and we will promptly delete it.


8. Third-Party Links and Services

The Service may display content sourced from third-party APIs and services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third parties. We encourage you to review their privacy policies.


9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by:

  • Posting the updated policy on our website
  • Displaying a notice in the app
  • Sending an email to your registered address (for material changes)

Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
